Colourful annuals with bright chrysanthemum-like flowers. Asters are frost tender and prone to wilt disease. Do not plant in soil which has grown asters the previous year - a light sandy soil, well prepared but not heavily manured is advised. Stake tall varieties grown for cut flowers.

Plant in spring and summer for flowers in summer to autumn. Can plant in winter in tropics.
