LavenderThere are about 30 species of lavender and many varieties and forms and all make lovely garden and potted plants. They need very well-drained soil and like some lime. Many of the lavenders grow best in cool climates and will not thrive in humid, wet coastal districts. French lavender, L. dentata, tolerates greater humidity than English lavender, and growing lavender in pots may well bring greater success than planting it in the garden. Prune plants back hard after flowering right from their first year.

Timing:

Plant all year round. Most flower in summer, L. dentata flowers in winter with flushes at other times.
