Very Old Plants

The Statice in my garden have stems that are about 3" thick with old growth that stand 2-4ft high. There is new growth and flowers at the very top. I dont wont to loose this plant but dont know what to do! I've tried to take cutting of new growth but cant get them to strike. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you in anticipation
