how to grow luculia

Help. I live in Sydney and I have so far killed about 5 luculia plants. However, I am not going to give up. What should I do to ensure my plant surives. The house across the road has luculia about 2 metres tall. Mine died when it was about a metre tall. How can I ensure that it does not fall victim to root rot, how do I protect it?
